This is the home page of David MacAlpine. This site is intended to be a running commentary on things I find interesting/useful. The page contains only valid html and css (lifted shamelessly from the css/edge. The scrolling effects and hi-lighting links on the menubar are all done with CSS and HTML -- no javascript. Unfortunately, Microsoft Explorer for windows has a broken implementation of CSS1 and scrolling effects are not quite right. If you came to this site using Microsoft Explorer for Windows, I would suggest that you use a web browser that correctly supports the published HTML and CSS standards.

Isn't there something to be said for the "viewable with any broweser" people?

I agree completely. My page renders HTML and CSS with no browser specific features or extensions (it even looks good in a text browser). All of the HTML and CSS is from the published definition. If a browser is broken, that is not my fault! These standards have been around for quite awhile. The CSS1 spec has been around since 1996. The last major release of internet explorer (ie6) was three years ago in sept 2001, yet ie6 only supports a subset of the css1 specification. (Two points: microsoft should have gotten it right back in the day, and second they've had 3 years to get it right). If anything I would have to code ie6 specific features (dhtml) to make my site look as intended. I would be much happier if ie6 simply failed gracefully and rendered the page like a text only browser. If you think my nag is too annoying let me know and I may code a ie6 specific site.

If nothing else it got me to raise the priority of getting mozila (it was one of those things on the todo list that I just never got around to) and now I'm addicted to tabbed browsing.

You would like the userfriendly series that starts on 2004.04.22 - mozilla related.
